Bonsai Ficus Plant

What is Bonsai Ficus Plant ?

Bonsai as everybody knows is an Eastern practice of miniaturizing trees and plants in a container. A Japanese word the term 'bonsai' means tray gardening. Research has it that 'bonsai' has its predecessor in the Chinese 'penjing'. The Korean craft of 'bunjae' also shares a remarkable likeliness. Ancient China is said to be the birth place of this miniaturization activity. Like martial arts the origin of this miniaturizing trait too had a need that had to be met. The martial arts evolved as a necessary instrument of self-defense required for the monks on their long and hazardous missions of propagating peace. Similarly it is said that this art came into being as it was seen as the best way to transport medicinal plants over a long distance. Discoveries have been made in Egyptian tombs of sketches showing miniature trees in pots. These are thought to have been kept for decorative purposes and the pictures date back to 4000 years ago! After this time there is evidence to suggest that trees were transported in the caravans of Asia as they travelled around as they were used for their medicinal properties should someone have fallen ill.

Bonsai Ficus Plant Potting Tips

You can buy a Bonsai pot from virtually any plant shop but make sure it has adequate drainage and preferably has little feet on it to allow the water to drain away and also allow a good level of airflow. Using a soil consisting of half organic matter and half grit will allow a good level of drainage while still giving the plant the anchorage it will need in it’s shallow pot.

By having a pot too large, your bonsai tree will look more of a plant in a pot rather then a full grown bonsai.

Most evergreen bonsai are placed in unglazed pots while decidous trees are planted in glazed pots.

It sounds simple but finger pruning takes some practice to do correctly. The first tree you grow should be considered your practice tree. Don't attempt to build your skills on a valuable bonsai. You can learn by practicing on an ordinary small bush. You will know that you have mastered the technique when you can remove growth cleanly without tugging on the plant.

For the plant to continue to survive or to grow, the soil has to be in moist.

Proper soil choice is critical. The soil affects the roots feeding and watering of your tree. The size and shape of the pot affects both the appearance as well as growth and health of the bonsai. As a rule of thumb be about 3/4 as wide as the tree is tall and about half as deep. The height of the pot should be roughly the same as the diameter of the trunk. Bonsai soils are designed to optimize drainage. They are usually a mix of coarse sand or gravel with peat or bark added for an organic element. Different trees will need various ratios of grit to humus. Usually dedidious trees need about 70% humus and 30% grit while evergreens will thrive better with 30% humus and 70% grit.

Pre-Bonsai material are often placed in "growing boxes" which are made from scraps of fenceboard or wood slats.
